| NVQ'S NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS |
NVQ’s are currently being phased out to be replaced with Certificates or Diplomas on the new QCF (Qualifications and credits Framework The new qualifications will be similar to the old NVQ;s in that they will be made up of Mandatory Units and Optional Units Like NVQ’s,, candidates must demonstrate that their practical skills and knowledge to reach the required level. These can range from level 1 to level 8. The normal minimum level of competence for most occupations is level 2.Like NVQ’s, candidate’s competence is determined by a qualified assessor with a background in the same occupational area. One advantage of the new qualifications on the QCF is that each unit can be separately accredited and earn credits that can be used towards a range of qualifications. The replacements for NVQ’s are easy to recognize as they still have an NVQ designation in the title. Example: The old NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care will be replaced in January 2011 by the NVQ Certificate in Health and Social Care Level 2 The government’s Train2Gain programme that funded NVQs and the new equivalents will close in March 2011. There are currently no plans for any new funding to replace this. Apprenticeships offer an alternative funding source where the NVQ certificate forms part of the framework along with a Technical Certificate and Functional Skills, For more information see Funding and About Apprenticeships
